GRANITE

A Natural Stone

Composition

Granite is formed from the slow crystallization of magma deep within the Earth's crust, making it an igneous rock. Primarily composed of three essential minerals: quartz, feldspar, and mica. These minerals provide granite with its distinct texture and appearance. Quartz lends hardness and durability, feldspar adds color and stability, while mica contributes to its captivating sparkle.

Durability & Strength

Granite is renowned for its exceptional durability, capable of withstanding immense pressure and resisting scratches and chipping. This makes it an excellent choice for kitchen countertops, flooring, and exterior cladding. Granite surfaces feature tiny pores that can absorb liquids, staining the surface. Thankfully, granite is one of the least porous natural stones. When properly sealed, it won't stain at all. But over time, the seal on your granite counter will start to deteriorate, leaving it open to stains.

Color Variations

Granite comes in mesmerizing arrays of colors and patterns. From delicate veining to bold speckles, granite slabs are available in an exquisite range of options. Each slab is truly one-of-a-kind, showcasing the remarkable variations created in nature's laboratory over millions of years.

Heat Resistance

Granite is naturally highly resistant to heat, scratches, and staining. Granite is also suitable for outdoor applications due to its ability to withstand extreme weather conditions. Whether in the kitchen or the bathroom, granite countertops offer a heat-resistant surface that can handle hot pots, pans, and curling irons without sustaining damage. Heat damage would occur only if the granite was heated unevenly. So briefly putting a hot pan down on your granite countertop isn't going to cause long-term damage. That said, we don't recommend putting hot pans on granite countertops — not for the granite's sake but for yours. Mohs hardness 6.5 - 8

Low Maintenance

Granite's low porosity makes it highly resistant to stains and liquid absorption. As a natural product, granite requires proper care and maintenance to preserve its luster and strength. Regular cleaning and sealing are recommended to protect the surface from potential stains and damage. With the right care, granite can retain its original beauty for generations to come. Simply wiping spills and debris away with a mild cleanser and avoiding harsh chemicals will help preserve the life and elegance of your granite.

Key differences between quartz and granite countertops

Quartz

  • Harder than Granite

  • More durable

  • Nearly indestructible

  • Stain-resistant

  • Not stain-proof (wine, coffee, chemicals), can be cleaned with a recommended cleaner

  • Easier to maintain

  • Non-porous

  • Doesn't require sealing

  • Resistant to staining

  • Easier to keep bacteria-free

  • No excessive heat on top, use cooking pads

  • Mohs Scale 7

Granite

  • More involved maintenance

  • Must be sealed so it will not stain, has to be re-sealed when needed

  • More porous, stains easily

  • Less durable

  • Naturally heat resistant but not recommended to put hot pans on granite can cause damage

  • Mohs Scale 6.5-8
